2-player games on Xbox Game Pass and console
Now, when I think of two-player games, it's all about sitting on a couch playing with a friend. I've tried to preserve that feeling as much as possible in this list by giving preference to local co-op experiences like Split Fiction. For some of these games, you can still play online, with more than two players, and competitively if you desire. I've highlighted these aspects of the game in the bullet points!
So, jump in and enjoy the best Xbox 2 player games available right now on Game Pass and console!
11. A Way Out
- Will you escape with all of the A Way Out achievements?
- Game Pass? Yes, via EA Play on Game Pass Ultimate
- Multiplayer type: 2-player co-op
- Online? Local or online
Featuring rival prisoners Leo and Vincent trying to escape together, you'll work alongside your buddy to make a gorgeously presented breakout happen. Rather than both doing the same activity every time, your chosen characters will diverge and come back together on different missions as they learn to trust each other.
It's not quite as refined as Hazelight's later games, but the Xbox One title is still well worth playing through (with a walkthrough for the achievements). A Way Out is a great first run at split-screen co-op greatness and remains amongst the best 2-player experiences you can have today.
10. Overcooked! All You Can Eat
- If you want to finish all the Overcooked! All You Can Eat achievements then it's a is a 15-20 hour mission, chef!
- Game Pass? This bundle isn't available, but Overcooked! 2 is available on Core, Standard, and Ultimate
- Multiplayer type: 2-to-4 player co-op
- Online? Local or online
It's chaotic and requires just enough teamwork to make it feel tactical without being too intense! That makes it perfect for pretty much any friend to jump in at the two-player level. You'll be laughing with each other at success and at each other's throats over burned rice in the best way possible. It's a genius game design.
While we have no walkthrough for this bundle, you can check out the Overcooked walkthrough for tips on the first game (included in All You Can Eat). Overcooked! 2 has a walkthrough in progress. All in all, I'd expect it to be a 15-20 hour completion, but its difficulty will depend on who you are playing with. I recommend going for the 1000G at the pace of your co-op team rather than trying to hammer it out at full speed. The fun is in the chaos!
9. Vampire Survivors
- There are so many Vampire Survivors achievements to unlock!
- Game Pass? Yes, on Standard, Core, or PC Game Pass
- Multiplayer type: Up to 4 players in co-op
- Online? Local only
With 2-4 player co-op, Vampire Survivors gets even more hectic. With its easy-going controls but hidden depths, I think it makes for a great time with the non-gamer in your life who enjoys casual mobile gaming. There is nothing quite like the obsessiveness you could both share over which weaponry you should pick and what upgrades you should be gunning for!
8. Gears 5
- The Gears 5 achievements are truly disgusting
- Game Pass? Yes, on Standard, Core, and PC Game Pass
- Multiplayer type: Up to 3 players locally in co-op, up to 5 players online in co-op and competitive modes
- Online? Local (Story Mode) or online (Story, Escape, Horde)
In Gears 5, campaign co-op does support up to three players. If you do play as a trio, one of you will have to take on the role of support bot Jack — which isn’t fun. So, make sure you stick to just two players, whether that's online or in split-screen.
Gears 5’s campaign will take you on a rollercoaster ride that’s filled with explosive action, plenty of character-driven stories, and the occasional dabble of horror. It’s well-polished and a real treat to play through in co-op — it’s probably the best Gears campaign since Gears of War 2, with a bunch of memorable story beats and bombastic set pieces.
- The Baldur's Gate 3 achievements will require you to roleplay your way to 1,000G
- Game Pass? No
- Multiplayer type: 2-4 players in co-op
- Online? Local or online
If you pick the right partner who wants to explore the world and the characters as much as you do while watching branching storylines unfold, you'll find an awesome shared experience. Plus, combat with the two of you is a total blast, opening up options for the pair of you to play off against one another and plan attacks in an excitingly dynamic fashion. Baldur's Gate 3 is well worth a co-op run!
6. TMNT Shredder's Revenge
- There are about 15 hours worth of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge achievements
- Game Pass? Core, Standard, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass
- Multiplayer type: 2-6 players in co-op
- Online? Local or online
Plus, what a game! With gorgeous pixel graphics, your favorite turtles, April O'Neil, and a great level selection, Shredder's Revenge is high on the list of the best old-school arcade games given a new lease of life in the modern era. Plus, the combat is just so addictive and colorful that you'll want a buddy to leap in with!
5. Diablo IV
- The grind of the Diablo IV achievements is long and brutal
- Game Pass? Standard and Ultimate
- Multiplayer type: Maximum 2 players in local co-op and 2-4 in online co-op
- Online? Local and online
With a beautiful graphics overhaul featuring cool effects for your custom characters' spells, attacks, and defensive moves, you'll be in awe of some of the chaos that unfolds. With a great selection of levels, a good sense of character progression and class diversity, and some wicked bosses, I think this is a quintessential 2-player game to think about playing!
4. Split Fiction
- Make sure you have a buddy equally as willing to explore the Split Fiction achievements!
- Game Pass? No, but will likely become available via Game Pass Ultimate and EA Play in the future
- Multiplayer type: 2-player co-op
- Online? Local and online
Once again, this brings such an inventive array of gameplay ideas oriented around two players. The easy way to explain how packed with unique ideas it is: I don't think that Split Fiction has a genre. It is all of them at different stages contained within a nice, compact runtime. This is practically on par with It Takes Two — so choose your 2-player goodness at will!
3. Minecraft
- You can easily collect all the Minecraft achievements in a pre-built world, or go for it naturally during play!
- Game Pass? Standard, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass
- Multiplayer type: 2-4 local or up to 30 in a server online, and it can be cooperative or competitive (or both!)
- Online? Local, LAN, and online
I'm not going to demean you by telling you what Minecraft is (we all know that!), but the sheer versatility of what you can do in the game now is madness. I've also found that split-screen works nicely, allowing two players to pursue their own goals or work together without one irritating the other too much.
So, go ahead and build a fully functioning auto-tilled farm, a house in the trees with a complex set of bamboo bridges, or a working redstone trap for the creepy crawlies coming for you at night. Minecraft is a sandbox, so go forth, you adventurers — make the most of your freedom!
2. It Takes Two
- It'd only be natural to grab all of the It Takes Two achievements together!
- Game Pass? Ultimate via EA Play
- Multiplayer type: 2-player co-op
- Online? Local and online
The split screen is sensationally done, with activities for both players that will make your jaw drop. Using every genre under the sun for inspiration in levels, you'll end up in Diablo-like RPGs and a Street Fighter-like fighting game. It's an unbelievable achievement for co-op gaming.
Throw in a touching story, and I have a hard time believing you and your co-op buddy won't be invested in the narrative, either. Plus, Hazelight and (to its credit for once) publisher EA have a system where if one player picks up the game, you can play online with a friend who also won't have to buy a copy. I incentivize you to play one of the best co-op games locally on the couch, though!
1. Halo: The Master Chief Collection
- Those Halo: The Master Chief Collection achievements will destroy you with 300+ hours completion time for the base game
- Game Pass? Standard, Ultimate, and PC Game Pass
- Multiplayer type: 2-player co-op in Halo 1+2 and 2-4 player co-op in the other entries, 2-4 player split-screen competitive online and custom game modes available
- Online? Local, LAN, and online
There is nothing better than you and your buddy hopping into a pair of Hornets on Halo 3’s The Covenant mission and taking on those massive Scarab tanks while that iconic Halo music plays. It’s one of those core gaming memories that you just never forget.
The Halo campaigns are filled with these memorable moments, and Halo: MCC makes it so easy to share these experiences with a pal. On top of all the campaign shenanigans, you also have online multiplayer, which is also an absolute blast while playing with a friend.
