Case Closed, aka Detective Conan (Japanese: 名探偵コナン, Hepburn:

Meitantei Konan, lit. "Great Detective Conan"), is a Japanese detective manga series written and illustrated by Gosho Aoyama. It has been serialized in Shogakukan's shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Sunday since January 1994, with its chapters collected in 103 tankōbon volumes as of April 2023. Due to legal problems with the name Detective Conan, the English language releases from Funimation and Viz Media were renamed to Case Closed. The story follows the high school detective Shinichi Kudo, whose body was transformed into that of an elementary school-age child while investigating a mysterious organization. Generally, he solves a multitude of cases by impersonating his childhood best friend's father and various other characters.

It premiered on May 24, 2004 on Cartoon Network as part of their Adult Swim block. Due to low ratings, only 50 episodes aired on the channel, with the rest being aired on Funimation Channel.
Had the Funimation English cast completed dubbing season 5. Fans would had heard Brina Palencia as Vi Graythorn aka Shiho Miyano. Also it’s revealed that had Funimation continued dubbing more episodes in English, then the series would have gone from season 5 to season 15. Meaning that the English dub would have dubbed up to episode 465. But fans also wished that this series could have dubbed up to at least episode 587. Not only that some fans speculated that Case Closed’s English cast would have dubbed movie 7 to movie 14 including the Lupin III vs Detective Conan movie.
Funimation Intended episode 124 and 125 to be episode 131 and 132. Therefore episodes 126 and 127 would be 133 and 134. Episode 128 would have been episode 135, while episode 129 would have been 136 to 139. While episode 130 and 131 would’ve been episode 140 and 141. Episode 132, 133 and 134 would have been episode 142 to 144. Episode 135 would have been 145. Episode 136 and 137 would have been episode 146 and 147. Episodes 138 and 139 would have been 148 and 149. Episode 140 would have been episode 150.
Detective Conan is the second series that is created by Gosho Aoyama. The first series that was created by Aoyama was Magic Kaito.
This anime was originally going to be dubbed in English as part of the original Fox Kids line up, but it wasn't due to the majority of the series containing homicides.
Kogoro Mori's name came from two mystery-related sources. "Kogoro" came from "Kogoro Akechi", the detective created by Edogawa Rampo, while "Mori" came from part of Maurice Leblanc's first name.
The name that the main character made up after his accident, Conan Edogawa, is derived from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as well as Edogawa Rampo, both very famous mystery/detective authors.
Wataru Takagi shares the same name as the character he voices Detective Wataru Takagi.
The majority of the series takes place in the Beika District of Tokyo.
In both the Japanese and English dub, Kaito Kuroba/Kaitou Kid shares the same voice actor as that of Shinichi Kudo.
The name of the coffee shop located below the Mori Family's apartment/Mori Detective Agency is "The Poirot".
Professor Hiroshi Agasa's car is a yellow Volkswagen Beetle.
According to Detective Conan producer Michihiko Suwa, Sonoko was supposed to appear only once in the anime, but since the staff liked Sonoko's voice actor's portrayal so much, they made her appear more.
Kamen Yaiba is a direct homage to Kamen Rider.
In 2002, the German TV channel RTL II initially aired this series in the afternoon, during the channel's childrens program. Despite the graphic violence in most episodes, the series still received a 6 rating and was completely uncut. Later that year, following the school massacre in Erfurt, Germany, the youth protection law was revised drastically, which had an effect on TV programs of any kind as well. Because of that, RTL II edited most of the episodes, with the exception of the rather harmless ones, and aired them the following year. The editing even went so far that, in one instance, a knife sticking in the back of a victim was digitally painted over. In 2016, German channel ProSieben MAXX was able to order the uncensored episodes.
Ran is one of the few characters who use old-fashioned cellphones, instead of trendy smartphones.
Heiji's favorite author is Ellery Queen.
In a fan poll, Professor Agasa was voted as the character most likely to be The Boss of the Black Organization. In an interview, Gosho Aoyama stated that Agasa is not the boss.
According to Gosho Aoyama, the character of Vodka was inspired by the gangster Le Cure from the French film, Diva (1981).
In many episodes, Gosho Aoyama makes many small mentions to Yaiba, his other manga.
Ran keeps a blissful sea cucumber key-ring on her phone, which she demanded from Shinichi as a penalty for causing her to lose her previous phone. Ran didn't actually expect him to buy it, but he did. This made Ran wonder if Shinichi was already in love with her at that time.
Gosho Aoyama, the creator of the Detective Conan series, stated that Ran is one of his favorite female characters.
Professor Agasa has a built in television in his car.
R. Bruce Elliott originally auditioned for the role of Dr.Hershel Agasa before being asked to read for the role of Richard Moore.
Conan/Shinichi and Ran share the same blood type.
Conan owns two cellphones, the one he uses as Conan and one that he uses as Shinichi. He is also shown using different kinds of cellphones throughout the series.
Sonoko has been shown to be very aggressive. For example when Genta called her "Auntie Sonoko", she punched him extremely hard, and when she was interrupted by a soccer ball, she threw it back at the kicker, causing him to fall back.
Genta Kojima's favorite fish to eat is eel.
Conan/Shinchi's favorite food is lemon pie and favorite drink is iced coffee. Shinichi's favorite food is lemon pie and was first shown in The Memories of First Love Case and is also shown in Lupin III vs. Detective Conan: The Movie when Daisuke say's that he isn't the only one who drinks iced coffee throughout the year.
According to Suwa, Momiji Ooka was made to be the "Sonoko of the West".
Conan's bad singing came to light as a joke after the anime began airing because Conan's voice actress Minami Takayama is a well-known singer. In Volume 15 of the manga, Takayama herself is kidnapped and Conan, who sounds similar to her, tries to take her place at a concert. However, despite having similar voices, they sound completely different when it comes to singing.
Up to episode 490 of Detective Conan, there are 342 cases.

Richard Moore's character is inspired by the famous japanese detective Kogoro Akechi, a character created by author Edogawa Rampo.
In episodes 102-103 (Historical Play Performer Murder Case / 時代劇俳優殺人事件) family names of the suspects - Okita (沖田) and Hijikata (土方) - are similar to the ones of real historical characters, head members of Shinsengumi Okita Souji and Hijikata Toushizou. Besides, although kanji don't match, but the victim's first name - Isami - reminds of Kondou Isami, the foundator of Mibu Roshigumi, which later became known as the very Shinsengumi.

Shinichi Kudo's birthday is May 4 (thus making him a Taurus), the date when Sherlock Holmes and Professor Moriarty fought over Reichenbach Falls.
In the English version of Case Closed, Jimmy thinks with his adult voice, Jerry Jewell while he is Conan. However in the Japanese version of Detective Conan, Shinichi thinks with just a more relaxed and matured tone of his young Conan voice, Minami Takayama.
Heiji Hattori’s first name comes as a reference to a detective named Zenigata Heiji, who essentially caught the criminals by throwing coins. Another famous anime character that shares the name is Inspector Zenigata from Lupin the 3rd witch throws handcuffs instead.
The name "Hattori" comes from historical figure Hattori Hanzo (1541 – 1596), a ninja of the Iga Clan from Hyogo prefecture in Western Japan. Hattori Hanzo was the head of Shogun Tokugawa's secret police force. Because of this Heiji is exceptionally skilled at kendo.
In the special episode #425 (around 1:00'40"), on a signpost Conan is referring at, the names of the cities or streets are seiyûs' family names: - straight ahead: (Minami) Takayama / - on the left: (Ken'ichi) Ogata / - on the right: (Megumi) Hayashibara.
The coffee shop located below the Mouri Detective Agency is called the “Café Poirot”. The name is based on one of Agatha Christie's most popular detectives, Hercule Poirot.
In episode 1, while the characters Ayumi, Genta, Mitsuhiko, Hiroshi Agasa and Kogoro Mouri make their anime debut in this episode. They however didn’t appear in the original manga chapter that this episode was based on. Hiroshi Agasa and Kogoro Mouri made their debut in the following chapter while Ayumi, Genta, & Mitsuhiko made their debut a few chapters later on in the manga.
In episode 1, the murdered victim in the first murder case of this episode was the mansion owner’s friend & business partner Tetsu Yamazaki. In the manga chapter that this episode was based on, the murdered victim was the mansion owner’s wife.
In episode 1 for the English dub, Ran sarcastically states that Shinichi looked at Hitomi's legs for the purpose of making a deduction, whereas in the Japanese Version she critiques him for knowing that Hitomi is a gymnast before shaking her hand.
In episode 1, for the English Dub, Kogoro takes offense to Ran's compliment of Shinichi, whereas the Japanese Version has him stating that he needs to make a living.

In episode 1, for the English Dub, Gin's reason for using the APTX 4869 on Shinichi was due to the fear of leaving a bullet trail behind. Whereas in the Japanese version it was due to the cops still being around after the recent murder on the roller coaster.

In the dub, Eri was not mentioned until the “Coffee Shop Murder Case”.
In episode 2, for the English dub, Conan blushes during Ran's hug because he was that close to her, whereas in the Japanese version he blushed because he felt her chest.
In episode 3, Ayumi, Mitsuhiko, and Genta introducing themselves to Conan and following him on the murder case was entirely exclusive to this episode as the manga chapter that inspired this episode didn’t feature them being involved.

In this episode the role of Gin & Vodka were replaced by the businessmen Ueda & Shimoda and thus removes the Black Organization's involvement in this episode.
The plot in episode 6 was the first anime exclusive plot that was not based on a pre-existing manga chapter.

Thus the ending of the episode featured a completely different conclusion than what was depicted in the manga.
In episode 13 marks the introduction of a new image for the "next episode" preview. The image features the Detective Boys looking at a painting hanging on the wall, which has the title of the next episode written on it.

In episode 17, when the remastered version of this episode aired on October 31, 2015. Some of the dialogue between the Detective Boys were cut out in order to fit the time slot.
In episode 18, in the manga chapter that inspired this episode, Conan rinses out Miss Matsumoto's mouth out with milk after he finds her collapsed, in an effort to neutralize the poison in her body. It is later stated that this bit of first aid may have been the reason to why Miss Matsumoto was discharged from the hospital sooner than anticipated. These parts were cut from the anime entirely.
In episode 18, in the manga chapter that inspired this episode showed that Conan accidentally knock out Sonoko and is forced to use her to make his deductions. However, in the anime Conan knocks out Sonoko intentionally to use her to make his deductions.
In episode 20, the manga chapter that inspired this episode was the original debut of Mitsuhiko Tsuburaya, Ayumi Yoshida, and Genta Kojima. For the anime, they made their first appearance in the first episode.
In episode 20, for the English Dub, Genta brags about his intention to beat the ghost with the other Detective Boys teasing him about it. Whereas in the Japanese Version the Detective Boys liken themselves as characters in an RPG game.
In episode 20, towards the end, Mitsuhiko says that they are going to investigate Shinichi's house which he says "is the last house on the left". This could be an allusion to the 1972 horror film of the same name.

In episode 50, the inspector who appears during Megure's questioning of Tsugawa has bears a resemblance to Takagi's earlier character design. It should be noted that this inspector wasn't voiced by Wataru Takagi, but was instead voiced by Isshin Chiba, who later would go on to inspire the creation of and provide the voice for Kazunobu Chiba.
In episode 54, for the English dub Conan describes Tequila having a Brooklyn accent. For the Japanese version he describes Tequila having a Kansai dialect.
In episode 54, marks the first time Conan encounters a different Black Organization member. This episode is also the first time since the first episode to feature a case that has the Black Organization being involved.
Goof: In episode 54, Conan upon hearing Kogoro mentioning having some Gin and Vodka, in which he recalls that those were the two men responsible for his condition. This created a continuity error as prior to this episode, Conan never previously learned the names of the two men who de-aged him with an untested poison capsule. In the manga chapter that inspired this episode, Conan did previously learned about Gin & Vodka’s names during the manga chapter that inspired the “The Shinkansen's Bomb Case” episode. But because Gin & Vodka were omitted from that episode, Conan never actually learned about their names from that point of the series. The English dub tried to fix this error by having Conan mention Heiji Hattori informing him that Gin & Vodka were the names of the two men responsible for his condition. In episode 118, in the manga chapter that inspired this episode, Heiji remarked that the trick that was used to make the corpse of the third victim fall to the ground is the same as the one used in a case that Kogoro (or rather, Conan) solved before. When it turned out that the anime series was going to continue past season one, the production team made this episode as a way to fix the plot hole.
